Origin of Valentine's Day

In earliest Rome, 14th February is celebrated as Valentine's Day and people worship the Goddess Juno the spouse of Jupiter and Queen of the Roman pantheon and connected with the Greek Goddess Hera, wife of Zeus. The holy marriage was held in the month of Gamelion till mid January to mid February and the Roman festival of Lupercalia was begun on 15th February. On the festival of Lupercalia, two youths used to run a track around the Palatine by hiding the strips of goat in their hands. Bluster from one of these flip-flops was believed to generate fertility in women. Some people also believe that during the festival of Lupercalia, the names of young women were put into a container and the names were drawn by a man. The boys and girls who were coordinated would be considered as partners throughout the period of the festival. Sometimes the coupling lasted for a year or possibly for a lifetime.
The proper story behind the origin of Valentine's Day is that, The Saint named Valentine refused to obey the orders to give up Christianity of Emperor Claudius II; he was arrested and hanged till death. He died on 14th February 269 AD. Claudius II ordered to stop performing the marriage of young people, as he thinks young and single man can served country well as soldier. Saint Valentine declines the orders and started performing the marriage of several people secretly. Once, Claudius II found him out and imprisoned. During his imprisonment he falls in love with jailor's daughter, who used to come regularly to meet him and wrote her letter that were signed "From your Valentine". This phrase would become so popular that people started using in their letters, as a symbol of love.

Some people believe that on this day bird's mate and sweethearts are chosen and in 496 AD Pope Gelasius honored martyr and marked 14th February as a Saint Valentine's Day. After that people started celebrating 14th February as a Valentine's Day by exchanging message of love through flowers, gifts, poems or planning a social gathering like a ball.
