There are various opinions behind the history of Valentine's Day. Some people state that, Valentine own fell in love with jailor's young daughter.. who visited him every day during his imprisonment. It is assumed that before his death, he wrote a letter to the jailor's daughter, which is signed "From your Valentine" a phrase that is still in use today by many of the people. Even though the history behind the Valentine's Day is misty, the stories undoubtedly highlight his appeal as a sensitive, brave and a romantic human being.
Some people believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to celebrate the anniversary of Valentine's death or funeral, which perhaps occurred around 270 AD.
In earliest Rome, February 14th was a holiday to tribute Juno. Juno was the queen of the Roman God and Goddesses of women and marriage. The next day, February 15th, began the spread of Lupercalia. On the evening of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on the chits of paper and placed into the jars. Each man would draw a girl's name from the jar and become the partners for the period of the festival with the girl whom he chose. In this way the custom of choosing maidens for Valentines, or saints as clients for the coming year appear on Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration of this new spread. |
