Story of Chinese Valentine's Day - Legend of Chinese Valentine's Day

The story is about the 7th daughter of Emperor of Heaven and an orphaned cowherd. The story of Chinese Valentines Day began from a good looking poor orphaned boy who lives with his elder brother and sister-in-law. After their parents past away, the elder brother inherited the house and the land. And the poor boy owned an old ox. To live he work on the farm's field with the ox everyday that is why he called as a cowherd. The 7th daughter of Emperor of heaven is good at handcrafting, especially weaving clothing so she was called a Weaving Maid.

In this story the ox was actually an immortal from the Heaven. He made some mistakes and was punished as an ox on the Earth. One day, ox suddenly spoke up to the cowherd, "You are a nice man. If you want to get married, go to the brook and your wish will come true." When cowherd went to the brook, he saw all 7 pretty daughters of Emperor taking a bath there. He fascinates by the youngest and the most beautiful one and he took away her clothes secretly. After bath other fairies went away but the youngest couldn't fly without her fairy clothes.

Then cowherd appeared and told her that he will return her clothes when she promises to be his wife. After a little hesitation and shyness, she agrees to be his wife and after two years of their marriage they have two children. One day ox was dying and told the cowherd that he should keep his hide for emergency purpose.

The Emperor found that sky is not beautiful without his 7th daughter weaving clouds and rainbows. He ordered to find the missing daughter and to bring her back. While the 7th princess was flying back to the Heaven, the cowboy wore the ox hide, took his children in two bamboo baskets and chased after his wife in the sky. The grandmother made a milky way in the sky, which kept them separated. The 7th princess was moved to the star Vega in the Lyra constellation. And the cowherd with his two children stayed in the star Altair in the Aquila constellation.

Chinese Valentine Story was moved by their true love. On the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, this couple is allowed to meet by the emperor. It is also believe that if the night Chinese Valentine's Day rains, the rain are the tears of the Weaving Maid and Cowherd.
