: Popular Customs and Traditions of Diwali Festival
Diwali is one of the few Indian festivals which are celebrated not only in India but also across the world. This Festival is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. There many traditions associated with Diwali and which are followed by all since an unknown period of time. These customs of Diwali are as follows.

- Tradition of light:-Tradition of light can be treated as a synonym of Diwali celebration. People light earthen lamps, candles, LEDs, electric bulbs etc. at Diwali night. It is said that people of Ayodhya illuminate whole city to welcome Shri Ram when he returned to after fourteen years of exile and victory over Ravana the king of Lanka. From that day onwards, the tradition of light becomes an integrated part of Diwali.
- Tradition of Rangoli:-Tradition of making Rangoli on the occasion of Diwali was originated in the state of Maharastra, but slowly it spread to all other regions of designed at the entrance or centre of living room or in the verandah on this festive occasion. Diwali Rangoli is based on the theme of image of Lord Ganesha, holy symbols like Swastika, Floral designs etc. Beauty of Rangoli is enhanced by placing ignited Diyas and candles in center of Rangoli.
- Tradition of cleaning and Decorating homes:-People clean and white-wash their houses on the occasion of Diwali. This creates purity in the atmosphere on this sacred occasion. There is a tradition of decorating homes with Torans, Flower garlands, Diwali craft works, candles, earthen lamps, chandeliers, electric bulbs etc.
- Tradition of shopping:-Everyone is caught up in shopping fever on the occasion of Diwali. People buy new dresses, gifts, ornamental articles, sweets, fire-works, Pooja samgri and other goods required for the celebration of Diwali.
- Tradition of bursting crackers:-The tradition of bursting of crackers and other fire work on Diwali is followed in all part of country. In north crackers are burst at night for the sake of enjoyment while in south India cracker are burst in early Diwali morning to scare away the evil spirits.
- Tradition of Playing Cards :-According to a famous legend Goddess Parvati was playing Dice with her Spouse Lord Shiva on Diwali day. She felt so delighted that she said that who so even gamble on the occasion of Diwali would remain prosperous through out the whole year. But people usually cross their limits while playing cards so this tradition is considered as mal-practice now days.

- Tradition of exchanging gifts :- People usually exchange gifts and sweets etc. with their family and friends. Gifting your love ones on this festive occasion the happiness and cheer of the occasion many folds.
- Diwali Pooja Tradition :- People do prayers and do worship of lord vishnu, Mata Lakshmi, Lord Ganesh, Shiva and Parvati on this day.
