Diwali Lighting : Traditional Diwali Light Decorations

Diwali is primarily a festival of Hindus. But it is celebrated by all Indians with zeal and enthusiasm.. Diwali is also called as Deepavali which means "Array of lamps". That is why Diwali is commonly celebrated as Festival of Light. Festival of Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil. On Deepavali eve thousands and thousands of lamps are lit to celebrate the festive occasion and to request the good to replace the darkness of human life with bright light of happiness and joy. People fill homes with diyas, candles, and electric light.
Many legends have been associated with this festival of light. North Indians linked the celebration of Diwali with comeback of shri Ram to Ayodhya with his brother Lakshman and wife Sita after fourteen years of exile and victory over Ravana-the demon king. The citizens of Ayodhya lit up the entire city with rows of earthen lamps to welcome lord shri Ram. According to south Indian legend Deepawali is related with the killing of NARAKASURA-the demon by Goddess Durga. No matter what the reason is, everyone celebrates this festival of light with full fervor litting up their houses, shops, markets streets brightly.

Lights for Diwali

Traditionally diyas-the earthen lamps with a cotton wick and some oil in them are used for litting up the homes and premises on Diwali. These days designer diyas, metal diyas, diyas in blue pottery are also used along with simple earthen diyas. With the passage of time lighting candles on the occasion of Diwali has gained popularity. Different types of candles such as floating candles, gel candles, perfumed candles are available in the market. But in this age of technology there is more and more inclination toward the use of electric light on Diwali. It includes use of electric bulb which give bright light and come in various form like candles diyas, fruits, and flowers. The latest fashion is the use of LED lights. The blinking LED lighting strips are available in different shapes and sizes. Also they can be set in different lighting patterns such as glow and shrink, move light, etc. Their blinking light add true glitter in the shimmering night of Diwali.
