Raja Bali or Mahabali was the grandson of Prehlad. He was an Asur. Yet he was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. As a boob granted in turn of his hardcore "Tapasya" he become invincible in war. Then he defeated Gods or Devas and take Devalok along with prithvi-lok into his charge. All the gods including king of gods- Indra sought Lord Vishnu's help. To help out the Devas, Lord Vishnu incarnated himself as "Batu-Vaman" and asked Bali to give him as much space as he could cover in three foot steps. Being a righteous follower of Holy Scriptures (Shastra), Raja Bali granted it. Then Batu-Vaman revealed himself as Mahavishnu and measure entire devalok in one foot step. Entire prithvi-lok in second and then asked Raja Bali where he place his third step. Raja Bali bow down and mahavishnu place his third step on Raja Bali's head. Then he compelled Raja Bali to go to Patal-Lok.
However Lord Vishnu highly impressed by the righteousness decides to ported his devotee with his divine protection. He gave him a boon that he would be the next Indra. Also he remained with him as his dwarpal or guard. Since Vishnu had prevented from living in Vaikuntha, Goddess Lakshmi disguises her self as virtuous Brahmin. Bali protected her as his own sister. During Sharavan Poornima celebration, Lakshmi Ji tied a scared thread on his hand and requests him to allow her husband to go with her. Raja Bali easily allows Lord Mahavishnu to accompany Goddess Lakshmi to Vaikuntha. Impressed with his sacrifice both of Lord Mahavishnu and Goddess Lakshmi grant him a boon allowing Raja Bali to go to prithvi-lok once in a year and meet his people, the day on which Raja Bali believed to come to prithvi-lok from patal-lok is the very next day of Diwali. |
