Goddess Lakshmi Legend
It is said that Goddess Lakshmi - The Goddess of wealth was incarnated on the no-moon night of "Kartik" month during the churning up of ocean by Dev-the Gods and Asur-the Demons. So worship of Goddess Lakshmi is an integrated part of Diwali.
Lord Rama Returned To Ayodhya
Another Legend associate Diwali with return of Lord Shri Ram. It is said that Lord Shri Ram returned to Ayodhya with his wife and brother after 14 years of exile and victory of Ravana-the Demon king of Lanka. Citizens of Ayodhaya prepare "Deep-malas" to welcome his king - Lord sri Ram.
Killing of Narkasur By Lord Krishna
Then there is a legend which relates Diwali with killing of Narkasur. It is said that Lord Shri Krishna killed Narkasur-a Demon on a day before Diwali and Diwali was celebrated in honour of his victory over Narkasur who has kept 16000 daughters of Gods and Saints as captive in his harem.
Return of Pandavas at Hastinapur
Diwali is also associated with the return of Pandavas. It is said that Pandavas returned to Hastinapur on the Amavasya (no moon day) of the month of Kartik after 12 years of exile. Their admirers celebrated their come back with great enthusiasm.
Coronation of king Vikramaditya
Celebration of Diwali is also related with mighty and just king Vikramaditya. It is said that Vikramaditya-the most famous Hindu king was coronated on the day of Diwali. |
