Origin and History behind the Diwali

Diwali has been celebrated in India from the ancient time. Diwali celebration is a unique combination of different philosophies. The history of diwali is as old as the history of India. The origin of diwali can be traced from puranas, the holy religious scriptures of Hindus. There are different views about the origin of diwali. The history of diwali can be summarized as follows:-
Story behind the history of Diwali festival

Killing of Mahisasur: according to the puranas, mahisasur, a demon become tyrant after getting a boon from the three gods Brahma Vishnu & Mahesh (Shiva) that none of them would punish him for any of his misdoing. Then goddess Mahadevi on persuasion of gods, asuras, and men knocked him down after a fierce war of ten days. Mahadevi grew ecstatic after her victory over the tyrant demon. She began to dance and continued to dance till the fifteenth day of kartik month. That day everyone prepare a grand feast in her honor. They lit earthen lamps, sang joys song and sweets distributed among all. That is how custom of diwali came into being.

Welcome Home of Lord Shri Ram : An other view of origin of diwali say that diwali was first celebrated in “treta yug” to welcome lord Shri Ram after his come back with his brother Lakshman and his wife devi sita from an exile of fourteen days and a victory over Ravana the demon king of Lanka.

Killing of Narakasur: one more view suggest that the celebration of diwali was started when Narakasur was killed by lord shri Krishna on the day before diwali in dwapar yug.

Emergence of goddess Lakshmi : the other idea of history of diwali holds that diwali is celebrated to commemorate the emergence of goddess Lakshmi from the bottomless sea on the thirteenth day of dark phase of the month of kartik during sumudra-manthan. This day is celebrated as dhan teras –the day of onset of the five day diwali celebration.
