| Festival of Govardhan Pujan : Giriraj Puja
Diwali is counted among the most famous festival of India. Govardhan Pujan or Giriraj Puja is counted among the religious festival of India as like Diwali. The next day after Diwali is celebrated as Govardhan festival. It is celebrated on the new moon day of the Kartik month in Hindu lunar calander. Govardhan is a mountain near Brij the birth place of lord Shri Krishna. |

Legend of Govardhan : Lord Sri Krishna and God Indra Story
According to a famous legend Lord Sri Krishna asked the people of gokul to worship Govardhan Mountain instead of god Indra as it is Govardhan that cause rains and not god Indra. Enraged with this insult, god Indra causes a heavy downpour in gokul. Then lord Shri Krishna held up the Govardhan Mountain on his little finger to save the people of Gokul and cursh down the pride of Indra Dev From that day onwards this day is celebrated as Govardhan Pooja and the custom of decorating and worshiping cows and oxen on this day come into light. The day of Govardhan pooja has an other aspect also.. This day is the “Shudh Kartik Padwa”. In Hindu mythology it is the day when king Bali come to Bhoo Lok from Patal Lok as per the boon given to him by Batu Vaaman (an incarnation of lord Vishnu). So this is also called as “Bali Padyami”. More over Vikrami-Samvat” was started from this day
Vishwakarma Day
This festival is also celebrated in the form of Vishwakarma Day. In Hindu mythology, Vishwakarma is the name given to the Architect of god. This day is celebrated as the day of workmen or the craft-workers. All the person indulge in some sort of skilled job such as tailors,architects,engineer, mill-workers, etc.worship their tools and machines on this day.
This day is also known as Ankakoot meaning mountain of foods. Pious people cooked 56 or 108 type of food item as bhog for Lord Shri Krishna. After prayer and worship varieties of sweets are raised in form of mountain in front of diets as bhog and then distributed among the devotees. |
