The Diwali Diyas (Clay lamps) is the traditional Indian lamp, Which is used as traditional candle and lighting. Diwali is a famous festival of India. Diwali is also known as Deepavali which means "Array of deeps (Diyas)". According to one of the legends associated with Diwali, Diwali was first celebrated in the honor of lord shri Ram returning Ayodhya with Sita and Lakshmana after fourteen years of exile and victory over Ravana. It is said that citizens of Ayodhya decorated entire city with diyas to welcome shri Ram. From that day the tradition of lighting diyas on Deepawali come into being. Nowadays , though houses, streets, shops, market etc. are largely illuminated with electric bulbs, LED etc., yet the tradition of lighting diyas has not lose its significance.
Tradition of Diwali Diyas
Traditional diya is or the earthen lamp is made out of clay. Lighting a diya in aarti is a must in Hindu culture. On Deepavali diya is not just lighted during the time of aarti but also to illuminate the entire home. For lighting a diya, a wick made of cotton is placed in diya and it is filled with ghee or oil. |

| In present time, due to competition a wide variety of diyas are available in the market. It includes diyas made of metals and blue pottery. Clay diyas are also presented in various forms and shapes. Some stores have launched designer diyas. Moreover we can decorate the ordinary clay diyas to make them look more attractive and beautiful. Traditional religious shapes like Swastikas, Om, etc can be painted on Diwali Diyas with acrylic colors. Glitters, sparkles, mirrors, beads, etc. could be used to enhance the beauty of traditional Deepawali diya. With increasing popularity and newer trends, it seems that Diwali diyas will continue to be used for illuminating the homes on the festive occasion of Diwali for many more years to come. |
