Festival of Dhanteras : An Auspicious Day of Hindu Calender
Dhanteras is also a religious and traditional festivals celebrated in India on day before Choti Diwali. Diwali fervor last for five days. The day of onset of Diwali celebration is known as dhan teras. It is celebrated as a good fortune festival and treated as auspicious day in the Hindu calendar. Dhanteras is also known as dhanvantri trayodashi. Dhanteras falls on the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight in the month of October or November. It is the thirteenth day of the krishan- paksha (the dark phase) the month of kartik according to the Hindu Lunar calendar. This year it is falling on Wednesday ie. 03, November 2010. |

Tradition of Dhanteras :
It is day on which people prepare themselves to welcome the Goddess of Wealth. People from all walks of life celebrate this festival of light with great pomp and show. They clean and decorate their houses, shops, etc. with full devotion. No one leave any stone turn up side down to make their house look attractive so that Goddess Lakshmi enter their house and shower wealth and prosperity upon them.
Legends of Dhanteras
There are many famous legends related with the celebration of dhanteras. According to one of the famous legendry stories, the festival of dhanteras is celebrated in the honor of god dhanvantri-the physician of gods and incarnation of lord Vishnu. This story say that god dhanwantri emerge from the sea on the day of dhanteras during "Samudra-Manthan"- the churning of sea performed by the gods and demons. The god dhanwantri bring with him Ayurvedic for the betterment of entire humanity. Another legend holds that dhanteras is devoted to Yuma- the god of death.
Shopping on Dhanteras - Jewelry and New utensils
Like any other Hindu festival, many rituals and customs are related with dhanteras also. It is consider ominous to buy new utensils on this day. People believe that prosperity come to their home with that new utensil. Some people also feel that buying gold on the day of Dhanteras bring good fortune in their lives. it is also consider the best day for setting new business, starting new projects, fixing wedding dates, buying new cars or jewelry and utensils.
Significance of Dhanteras of Indians
This day considered highly auspicious by the mercantile community. In Maharashtra there is a unique custom of lightly pound dry coriander seeds with jaggery and offering this mixture as "naivedya". In villages, farmers adorn and worship their cattle as cattle are the main source of their income. In south India, cows are decorated, given a special feed and worshipped as it is believed that goddess Lakshmi comes in the guise of cows. In some parts of India, people ignite "Yuma-diya" and worship the god of death for long lives. Also many people light earthen lamps on the either side of the entrance of their house to welcome the goddess Lakshmi and pray her to bless them with the mightiest blessings. |
