On persuasion of Satyabhama, beloved wife of Lord Shri Krishna, lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasur. He returned the earrings to Aditi and freed the sixteen thousand women from his harem. Later he accept all those women in marriage when the gods and saints urged him to do so. Even the mother of Narakasur declared that Narakasur's death is not an occasion to moan but it is a reason to celebrate. From that day on ward this day is celebrated as Narak Chaudus or Narak Chaturdashi. During the war with Narakasur Lord Sri Krishna's forehead was smeared in the blood of Narakasur. So he was given a massage of scented oils all over the body and then a sacred bath with uptan was given to him. This brings froth the custom of having a bath before the sunrise on this day..
Celebrations of Choti Diwali in India
In south India, the day of victory of good over evil is celebrated in a unique way. People wake up early in the morning they mix up kumkum in oil. This mixture represents blood of the demon. Then they break a bitter fruit which represent the head of a monster and apply that mixture on their forehead. After that they take a special bath with sandalwood oil. In maharastra, steamed vermicelli with milk or puffed rice with curd are served to every member of family after early morning bath.
But the majority of Indians celebrates this day more like Chhoti Diwali. They clean and decorate their houses. They light few earthen lamps and candles at the entrance of their houses to welcome The Goddess of wealth. Also few crackers are busted to celebrate choti Diwali. |
